"Fill 'er Up"?

   I'm sure you've heard the term, "Old Florida". Places that show you how Florida used to be, before the condos and high rises took over. There's not many of these towns left. But, Eastpoint is one of those places, and it's right across the bridge from St. George Island.
 

The "Big Top"

 You're not going to find any malls, or movie theaters in Eastpoint. There's a post office, a bank, a mechanic, putt-putt golf, for your entertainment, and for your shopping needs, a Dollar General, and the Big Top grocery. And with a few more small local businesses, it's got pretty much everything you need.

   Eastpoint takes up about 7 square miles, and has a population of about 2,400 people. (The 2010 census reported 2,337, but I suspect there's a few more people now). 
  

 There's a few restaurants that boast the local seafood. And, a couple, that hit hard times, and had to close their doors.

    Like St. George Island, Eastpoint has never been incorporated, so growth is slow. Most of the people here, make their living on the water. And with the recent troubles in the oyster industry, (see "Trouble on the Bay"), it's getting harder and harder, for people to make a living here. But, they'll never stop trying, because it's all they know. And being on the water, is what they love.

  This is "Old Florida". The way things used to be. People move at a slower pace, and they appreciate the simple, good things in life. Like a good day of fishing.
   When you drive through places like Eastpoint, Slow down, and take a close look. Don't get in a rush. There's not many towns like this left.  What I consider, the jewels of the south.

   Maybe you'll meet an "old salt", that'll be happy to tell you when the oyster boats are coming in, and ask you if you want to "sit a spell", and  share a beer with him.

Oystering the old fashioned way, is hard work. But, being on the water is what they love.

Living life at a slower pace

   Eastpoint is a place to be treasured for what it is. And we can only hope it won't change for awhile.     

Reflections

The Big Picture

    With a recent turn of events, there's been a lot of time, to sit and reflect on how I came to live on St. George Island, the people of the island, and the beauty that surrounds it.

    And it made me think of reflections you can see, if you're kayaking on the Apalachicola River, or on any of the creeks that branch off of it.
 Sometimes, the waters are as calm as glass, and it can make you feel like you're the focal point of a painting. But it's when you explore the shoreline, that your imagination is set free!.

     Reflections are different with every passing minute. The time of day, the calm of the waters, or the time of year, are all things that determine what you might see in a reflection. It's up to your imagination. Two people can look at the same reflection, and most of the time, they're going to see two totally different things.
   I have a friend from Vermont, who's a very talented artist. You might describe her work as being a little abstract. And she has ability to see things differently than anybody else. 
   We've been kayaking together, but, I never saw "The Swamp Queen" until she showed me the picture. As a matter of fact, there were a lot of things I wasn't seeing!  So, it was time to stop, and take a closer look. Really take time to reflect.

The Year in Review

"Island time" is a  way of life. A state of mind. It doesn't necessarily mean, "slow". Although, the people on St. George Island, generally don't get in a big hurry. Being on "island time", simply means, you don't need a clock. Things'll get done. Don't worry. 
   Time isn't wasted. On the contrary. You make the most of it, and enjoy every minute of it. The word "late", is rarely used.
    Not everyone can adjust to it. But if you find yourself living on "island time", you'll have a better understanding of "less is more". The less you try to fit into one day, the more likely you are to remember what you did. The downside to living on "island time", is sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day. I'm anxious to share more of my "Island Life", in the coming year. But in order to share more, I'm going to write less. Sometimes, pictures will be all that's needed, for you to enjoy St. George Island, and all the fun, and beauty that surrounds it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

In July, this 60 foot, 100 ton lighthouse, was moved from Cape San Blas, where it had been standing for 100 years, to Port St. Joe, about 30 miles from St. George Island. In 2012, hurricane Isaac washed away so much of the shoreline, Elgin Air Force Base, who owned the land that the structure stood on, deemed it surplus. So, with private donations, and state appropriations, Port St Joe raised over $1,000,000 , and the Dept. of the Interior, deeded the lighthouse to the city.  Two keeper houses, and an oil house, where also a part of the 900  foot convoy.

This 13 foot tiger shark, was caught in the gulf, off the shore of St. George Island. Needless to say, this picture got in the  local paper with a warning to keep an eye on your dogs and children! The year has been extremely hard on the oyster men. With very few viable oysters in the bay, it's a possibility the bay will be closed down for oystering for an extended length of time. This will give the bay time to recover from over oystering, and the lack of fresh water, that's needed for the oysters to grow.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

On the 12 miles of beaches, on St. George Island, there were over 200 loggerhead sea turtle nests this year, which is about average. St. George Island is a known nesting site for the endangered turtles, and they're monitored very closely by many volunteers. The chances of seeing one hatch, are slim, as they usually hatch at night.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

We didn't break any records, but the first annual paddle jam was a huge success.

                                                                                         

The monarch migration didn't seem as plentiful, as in past years. But, they still made a stop on the island, on their way to Mexico.

Many odd things were picked up for the coastal clean-up. Being the coordinator for Little St. George was a rewarding task. The volunteers, and myself, gathered up over 500 lbs. of trash. And picking up on the entire little island was impossible.

It's always fun, seeing a new critter, that you don't see up north.
And this was certainly a new one on me!!

It was speculated that an early cold snap may have been the reason, thousands of jellyfish washed up on the bay side of the island. It just doesn't seem natural to see icicles on the island. And this is just skimming the surface, of the fun and beauty that surrounds you, when you live the "Island Life". "Flipper" The King of the Sea

    Seeing the dolphins is something you never grow tired of. And they're enjoyed all year around, on  St. George Island.

  They prefer shallow seas, and coastal waters, so, Apalachicola Bay is the perfect environment for them. And on occasion, if you're on the beach, you can see them swimming along the shore, searching for their next meal. And if you're lucky enough to be swimming in the gulf when they come by, they might just swim with you!

  Sometimes, they'll come up into the canals, looking for fish. They'll cruise along, barely making a wake, then, all of a sudden, the water explodes! That's when you know they've found what they're looking for.
   Dolphins are strict carnivores, eating fish and squid. They hunt their prey by using what's called echolocation. This is what they are doing when they make a "clicking" sound. They're using their ears, to hunt. They'll also follow sea birds, and ships, to catch fish.

    It's not often that you see a lone dolphin. Usually you see them in groups, or pods, of 3 or more. There have been pods spotted, that number in the thousands. These are called "super pods". I don't  any know of any "super pods" that have been seen around St. George Island. But it's not unusual to see a group of 30 or so swimming together in the bay. If you happen to see them when you're out on a boat, and they're not focused entirely on fishing, they enjoy playing in the wake. Or they may take up following you. They may just want to play, or they want to see if you stir up any fish.
   There are 40 different species of dolphins. Whales are also considered a type of dolphin. The whales, and the kind of dolphins around St. George Island, are know as "Oceanic" dolphins, as opposed to "River" dolphins, that live in the freshwater rivers of Asia and S. America. Of the Oceanic dolphins, there are 32 species. The most common around the island is the bottlenose.
  They mate throughout the year, usually having one calf. When they're ready to give birth, they'll leave the pod, and come to the surface in order for the calf to take it's first breath. A calf can nurse up to 2 years, and will stay with their mom, anywhere from 3 to 8 years.
   It's been said that dogs and dolphins have a language all their own. And, after seeing some of the things I have, it's hard to dispute. A dolphin sees just as clearly outside the water, as it does under it. So if they're following the boat, and happen to see dogs on board, their interest is peaked. And the dogs, are certainly interested in them. There's no fear on either side. Just curiosity. The dolphins will appear to almost tease the dogs, and start showing off by "sky hopping" or, jumping out of the water.

   Here's a couple interesting facts about dolphins. Only half of their brain sleeps. The other half stays awake to prevent them from drowning. Even in sleep, they need to breathe. So half of the brain has to stay awake to get them to the surface to take a breath.
   The bottlenose dolphin can live to be over 40 years old.

    Because the dolphin lacks certain lobes and nerves, they have a very poor developed sense of smell.
   The dolphin is never thought of as an aggressive mammal, but when a male has to defend it's territory, or a female feels the need to protect it's young, they'll be aggressive enough to bite each other. But it's extremely rare to hear of aggression towards people.
